Have you heard of a young man by the name of John or Jonathan Deane, tall and blonde, 23 years. He came out into the Mara 3 weeks ago

He is somewhere in the Mara living with a couple, white man who has married a maasai, they have a son – Saningo.

The family he is staying with is setting up campsite in the Mara, though the lady does not know where.

The mother Tessa is looking for him, incase you have come across him – ask him to e-mail her.

A tiny feeling that this chap would be high maintenance.

In my years as a reporter— covering stories from South America to the Middle East for magazines and newspapers from The Baltimore Sun and the Christian Science Monitor to Beirut’s Daily Star, as well the time I spent on two masters degrees in journalism and international affairs at Columbia University— I’m become well-versed in the ethical prohibitions against striking any overt deals with the subject of a profile. Naturally, a profile of a nonprofit that has helped preserve Kenya’s storied wildlife through a recent dark chapter of history would probably include your fundraising efforts and the struggle that your mission entails. I would imagine that any magazine that buys the story might likely include a link to your website. But much of that is in the editor’s hands and, as a journalist, my job is to pursue the truth of the story without compromising the integrity of the story by promising things that, in the end, are someone else’s decision. I certainly understand that my tagging along could impose a burden on your staff, but in facilitating such coverage you would have to do so because you feel that the intrinsic merit of educating people about the work that you do— and about the challenges that Kenyans and preservationists alike face— resonates with the spirit of your mission. Please advise whether or not I can expect your cooperation.

The British Business Association, in conjunction with the American Chamber of Commerce and the East Africa Association are conducting an event called “A Meeting in the Mara – The US$200 Million Dollar Photograph Initiative” on 17/18th May. 200 of the top business executives, international tour operators and international press corps will depart from Air Kenya at Wilson Airport to engage in the taking of one symbolic photograph to be distributed worldwide demonstrating that Kenya is safe and open for business in an effort to kick-start the tourism business and recover some of the lost revenues.

Hello, I need a tent.
What kind of tent?
A two man tent.
Where will you be using it?
Well, it won't be me using it, but it'll be used when grazing cattle.
Where exactly?
The Maasai Mara. So it's sunny but it likes to rain.
What about this tent with the porch?
Ah yes, that would be a good idea, as he can cook in there if it's raining.
Yes, with a good camping stove you could open up both doors for proper ventilation, and the ground sheet is also fireproofed. What kind of stove would he be using?
Um. More like an open fire.
I cannot, under any circumstance, condone the use of an open fire in a tent. What about a tent without a porch?
Yes, that's probably a better idea.
